Hello, it’s Hugo, from the Webdiffusion team. In this module, we take a closer look at the control room: the PCR app, which runs on a PC or a Mac, and Backstage mode, when the studio does without it. And above all, how to switch from one to the other.
PCR stands for Production Control Room: the control room application, installed on a PC or a Mac at the venue of the show. On the left, its outputs: the program ready on the PCR, the recording, the upload to the cloud, the broadcasts and the NDI output. On the right, the monitors: the program and the preview, to drag onto the control room’s screens.
In the manager, the Home screen shows which control room is linked to the studio, in the Control room section: here, the PCR app on a Mac. Just above, in the Access & options section, is the Backstage mode setting.
In Backstage mode, the studio does without its control room: everything goes through the cloud. Preparation, recording, the prompter and the intercom carry on; the mixed program, high definition and the broadcasts stop. The Backstage plan always works this way; with a Live plan, the administrator decides.
To switch, the administrator first turns on Cloud backstage, which makes all the sources available in the cloud, then clicks Backstage mode. A window sums up what will happen: connected devices reload and reconnect, and the intercom cuts out for a few seconds. The administrator confirms with Switch to Backstage mode.
The switch is refused while the studio is on air, recording or broadcasting, and as long as the PCR app isn’t synchronized. To come back, you click Backstage mode again, then Leave Backstage mode: the PCR app takes over the studio again.
To sum up: the PCR app produces the program on site, on a PC or a Mac; Backstage mode runs the studio through the cloud; and the administrator switches from one to the other from the manager’s Home screen. In the next module, Léa takes you through a production, from start to finish. And to go further, the article “Manager, studio and control room” is waiting for you in the Help center.
